THIS LETTERBOX HAS BEEN RETIRED
This 280 acre park was originally used as a tree nursery by James L. Goodwin. He bequeathed the land to Connecticut in 1967. It was then dedicated as a Great Pond State Forest. There is an outdoor chapel, often used for weddings, near the entrance of the park.
Follow Rt. 167 south past Rt. 10 and 202. Turn right on Firetown Road. Take left at fork onto Great Pond Road. Entrance on right.
Follow path that leads off towards Great Pond from the second wooden gate. Stay to your right and cross a bridge. There are many side trails leading off to the water's edge. Stay on the main trail and keep the pond to your left. At the four way intersection stay on the main trail going through a dense stand of rhodendron. This section of the trail is beautiful when in bloom, as is the pond which is covered with water lily in the summer. When you arrive at the boardwalk, stop at the very beginning. The Great Pond Letterbox is snuggled in the limb of a half dead tree on your right. Continue down the boardwalk and over an old bridge back to the parking lot.
